“True” 100% Total Language Immersion.®

Brief Description Languages   Countries

You live in the home of your host, a well educated native speaker.  You have your meals with your host.  Your teacher is either your host or comes to the home and gives you lessons.  You are totally surrounded by the language you are learning; you are isolated from hearing your own native language.  It is a cultural experience as well.  You also get out and practice the language in everyday activities.  A method that is very popular in Europe.  Very effective.  Even if you have only a few days or one week, you will notice the improvement.

More Detailed Description.

  • It is an excellent program that provides executives and professionals with the opportunity to improve language skills in a limited period of time.  Even if you have only one week, you will notice an improvement.  The longer you stay, the more you will accomplish.  It is very successful in Europe where the knowledge of foreign languages is essential.
  • For those who are apprehensive about “living with strangers…”  We work with very carefully selected hosts and teachers.  We do not work with hosts that commercially “rent rooms” to tourists.  In each region, there are Regional / Local Organizers who have personally visited all the homes / hosts.  There is a 24/7 Emergency Service while you are in the homestay.
  • You will live in the home of a host teacher, who is well educated.  All those with whom you come in contact speak to you only in the language you are learning.  You will hear only that language at all times.  You are prohibited from speaking your own native language (except in an emergency).  It is extremely effective.  You are not restricted to the host’s home.  You are encouraged to get out and use the community as your classroom; to interact with local people as much as possible.
  • We ask you to provide us with background information.  We match you with host teachers with some similar interests.  The more you have in common with the host teacher, the more interesting the lessons and the conversations, and the more productive and enjoyable you will find language learning.
  • In order to properly learn a foreign language you have to hear it and listen to it and use it in natural settings while you participate in everyday activities.  You need to “live it to learn it.”®  Developing a vocabulary and using it in everyday conversations (no matter how basic) from the beginning is essential.
  • Conversations about the latest “news,” sports, history, art, politics, etc. – in other words traditional classroom type discussions – are easy.  The hard part of foreign language learning is trying to both understand and participate in the “he said,” “she said,” “if,” daily life type conversations.  Social conversations – no matter how basic – are the most difficult.  The 100% Total Language Immersion® program gives you the opportunity to participate in these mundane, but linguistically important, conversations.
  • All host teachers in 100% Total Language Immersion® program are native speakers and college graduates.  All are qualified, linguistically and culturally, to teach executives and professionals.  Host teachers have a wide variety of interests and bring different experiences into the language learning experience.
  • No one can guarantee miracles, however, even after one week, you will notice an improvement.  In answer to those who say that “studying for only one week is a waste of time,” we say that in one week you will learn much more than if you do not study at all… and you can always do it again… and again.

Foreign Language Institutes in Foreign Countries.

Brief Description Languages   Countries

Foreign language study – private tutoring or small classes – in a foreign language institute in a foreign country.  You have different program options (number of lessons per week, number of students per class), lodging options and cultural and leisure activity options.  Flexible Schedules.

More Detailed Description.

  • The traditional way to study a foreign language is to study in a foreign language institute in a foreign country.   It is a business that started in Europe.  Foreign language institutes can now be found all over the world.  You are immersed in the language and culture.  In most cases, you can choose between private tutoring, small classes, or a combination of both.
  • We select programs that offer flexible schedules for independent / unaccompanied / individuals as well as for small groups.
  • All programs make sure students have every opportunity to speak the target language with native speakers as much as possible.  After class, you are encouraged to get out and use the community as your classroom; to interact with local people as much as possible.  You need to “live it to learn it.”®
  • Conversations about the latest “news,” sports, history, art, politics, etc. – in other words traditional classroom type discussions – are easy.  The hard part of foreign language learning is trying to both understand and participate in the “he said,” “she said,” “if,” daily life type conversations.  Social conversations – no matter how basic – are the most difficult.  You are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity of being in a foreign country to participate in these mundane, but linguistically important, conversations.
  • We make every effort to select only excellent language programs.  All programs have been chosen for Quality of:

▪ language instruction and materials,
▪ cultural activities & excursions,
▪ personal attention to the student,
▪ the administrative staff,
▪ living accommodations,
▪ and variety of leisure & social activities.

  • In almost all cases the institutes must be independently owned and owner operated.  We prefer to work with “Hands On” Directors who must be on site or readily available to resolve problems.
  • We will not work with multi-city language schools or chains or multi-country language chains.  To reword a cliché:  “Bigger is not better.”  We prefer the smaller, more personal approach.

A 6th option for Spanish is a special Spanish in Miami® Language & Culture Program.  (see Below)

Speak it Now!®  No More Excuses.®

Brief Description Languages   Locations
  • English:
A program for those many executives and professionals who have a background in English but do not have the opportunity to use it, and are losing their skills.  They do not need more classes, they need to speak it.
  • Spanish & Portuguese:
A program for those who are learning the language and need/want to get beyond the textbook, and actually use it.  You need to be put in situations where you have to speak the language with native speakers while participating in everyday activities.  It works!

More Detailed Description.

  • Executives and professionals in South Florida have a unique set of requirements; different from those in other cities in the U.S.
  • Many non-native speakers of English have studied it extensively in their native country and even at one time spoke it quite well… but when they arrived in Miami, they found they did not need English… and speak Spanish all the time… and lose the skills they once had.  They need to practice speaking English to bring their dormant skills back to the level they had before.  Now, they do not need to study it; they need an intensive “hands on” refresher / review.
  • Many native speakers of English are learning Spanish because of the number of Spanish speakers in South Florida or because they have business in Spanish speaking countries or have employees who speak only Spanish or are learning Portuguese because they have business in Brazil or Portugal.  They need a combination of passive classes (classroom instruction) and active language lessons.
  • Most language education for executives and professionals takes place in the classroom or in the office.  You did not learn your native language that way.  You learned it by hearing it and speaking it on a daily basis.
  • Foreign Language Study is an Out of Classroom Experience.  You need to “live it to learn it.”®  You need to use; to put in practice, what you are learning in class or what you have studied previously.  From the beginning, it is essential to build up your vocabulary and use the words in ordinary conversations while you take part in everyday activities in natural settings.  You need to be put in situations where you have to speak the language with native speakers in a relaxed setting.
  • Conversations about the latest “news,” sports, history, art, politics, etc. – in other words classroom type discussions – are easy.  The hard part of foreign language learning is trying to both understand and participate in the “he said,” “she said,” “if,” type conversations.  Social conversations – no matter how basic – are the most difficult.
  • A good foreign language program must be a balance of formal study and hitting the streets and using your skills.  Our programs will provide you with the correct balance.  We offer students the option of dividing their time between passive lessons and active lessons.  Those who need just to practice latent skills can choose just active lessons.

Spanish in Miami.®  (Language & Culture Program)

Brief Description Languages   Locations

Learn Spanish in a total immersion environment and participate in and appreciate the multi-cultural diversity of Miami / South Florida.

More Detailed Description:

  • FLSAS has organized a “Spanish in Miami”® Program.  After 30+ years, we know (or we hope we know) what participants are looking for in a “Study Abroad” Program.  Technically, it is not really Study Abroad, because you are still in the United States.  Physically, yes, you are in the United States, but the buildings, the billboards, the signs, the people, the foods, the palm trees, the newspaper headlines, etc. might make you believe otherwise.
  • This is a program for those who, in addition to the total language immersion experience, want to experience the cultural offerings of Miami’s Spanish speaking community.
  • We know you will learn Spanish.  We know you will learn a great deal about the customs and cultures of many nations.  We hope you will enjoy yourself.
  • Please come with an open mind, the spirit of cooperation, the ability to adjust to different customs and cultures, and a sense of humor.

Miami, a Bi-lingual / Multi-Cultural City.

  • Miami is known as the “Gateway to the Americas.”  Miami (Miami-Dade County) is over 60% Hispanic.  Many areas, Little Havana, Hialeah, Westchester, etc. are almost 100% Hispanic.
  • In contrast with other cities in the U.S. with a high Hispanic population, the Hispanic population of Miami is much better educated.  Also, in contrast with other bi-lingual cities worldwide, in Miami, there is a constant influx of educated native speakers of Spanish.
  • It is not a static population.  In addition to the people who immigrate to Miami for political or economic reasons, there are also a high percentage of tourists from Latin America who come for short stays as well as others who have homes or apartments here and return for extended vacations each year.  The continuous presence of businesspeople from Latin America adds to the educated Spanish speaking population.  In Miami you are able to be totally immersed in Spanish; it is very easy to hear Spanish correctly spoken by educated native speakers at all times.
  • Although Cubans still predominate, all countries of the Americas are well represented.  Every nationality has its own social and cultural center whose members welcome visitors to their events.
  • The newspaper lists daily discussion groups (practical matters and/or cultural interest) in Spanish, and in bookstores you can find books and magazines from all over the Spanish speaking world.  Even the local Borders and Barnes & Noble have a considerable collection of Spanish materials.
  • In many areas of Miami, you will think you have left the United States and are in a different country.
